4 Steps to Switching Lawn Care Companies

If you haven’t been happy with your lawn care company, you might be in the process of finding a new lawn service. While you might assume that the hardest part is researching lawn companies, actually going through with the cancellation can actually be kind of tricky, too.

In fact, we have heard some horror stories from folks who say that their lawn care company made it really hard to switch. Even after calling to cancel, some lawn care companies will pretend like they didn’t get the memo and keep showing up and trying to bill for their service.

It’s sneaky but these aren’t highly reputable companies that are doing this kind of thing.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on how to fire your lawn care provider. These steps will help set you up for success.

How to Cancel a Lawn Service

It should be a matter of just calling up and canceling, right? Well, for some lawn care companies, that’s true. But as we mentioned above, we’ve heard from folks who have really been given the runaround while trying to cancel. That’s why we’ve put together these steps to follow.

#1: Evaluating Your Decision to Cancel a Lawn Service

First and foremost, we want to address reasons why it might be time to start looking for a new lawn care company. We actually wrote an entire article about this which you can read if you’re looking for more information.

To sum it up, if you’re having a really bad experience (being ghosted, for instance) or seeing really poor results, then you’re probably wise in looking for a new lawn service.

However, we do want to mention that lawn care is a process and therefore realistic expectations are important. Your lawn care company SHOULD have set you up with these to start. If they’ve overpromised and implied you could have an amazing lawn overnight, well, that’s obviously on them.

But sometimes homeowners expect to see results faster than possible. If you’re canceling your lawn service because of unrealistic expectations, then you are only setting yourself up for disappointment again, with a new lawn service.

#2: Researching a New Lawn Service

Ok, so you had entirely realistic expectations but your lawn care company just seriously let you down. Many people have very legitimate reasons for canceling their lawn service.

The first thing that you should do if that’s your decision is to start researching other lawn care companies.

You want to make sure that you have a new company lined up so that you can move right into a new lawn care program and get your lawn back on track. While it doesn’t always work out this way, a good time to research lawn care companies and make a choice is in the off-season. You can use this time to make sure you’re finding an excellent company…and then you can make sure that you’re all set up in time for the spring season.

#3: Call to Cancel (and Then Get it in Writing)

Our best advice when it comes to how to cancel lawn service is to call and speak to an actual person about the cancellation. Then, do two things.

  • Ask for the person’s name who you are speaking to.
  • Ask them to put the cancellation notice in writing (via email or a mailed notice).

Basically, you want to have proof that you canceled their service.

Another way to approach this, if they aren’t providing that proof, would be to email them after the phone call. In that email, say who you spoke to (including the time and date), and then write out that you canceled your service.

Express that you would like a confirmation response to your email.

We know it all sounds like a bit much but after hearing different stories over the years about lawn care companies that made it really hard to cancel, we think it’s worth a little extra effort.

#4: Beware of Last-Ditch Attempts to Prevent You From Choosing a New Lawn Service

Another thing that we have heard from folks who went to cancel their lawn service is that they’re often offered “deals” or “freebies” to try and retain them as a customer.

Perhaps they’re willing to drop their price or they’re going to give you a service for free.

But if you’ve experienced various problems from them in the past, it is unlikely they are going to be resolved just because they’re giving you something for free (or cheap). If you have good reasons for canceling, then stick to your gut instinct.

Those who get sucked-in because of the freebie often end up being disappointed that they only prolonged the inevitable. A couple of months down the road, you’re likely to be right back where you are, looking for a new lawn service.

Making a Confident Switch

Hopefully this article has given you some insight as to how to cancel lawn service.

It really shouldn’t be hard (and it isn’t always that way), but there are just some companies out there that are desperate to keep business because they have such a revolving door of customers. These are the types of companies to be leery of in the first place.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to making a switch that will make you happier in the long run. You deserve to be satisfied not only with your lawn care results but with your entire experience of working with whatever lawn care company that you choose.

Do your research and find a company that you feel confident is going to meet your needs.

It might feel like a big decision (and a lot of research), but it will be worth it. In the end, by choosing the right lawn care company for your Lousiville home, you can hand over your worries and get back to enjoying your lawn.
