If you are not happy with your lawn company, you might be wondering whether it’s time to move on. But perhaps you’re not totally sure whether your expectations are reasonable. Are you expecting too much and will you really see a change if you hire a new lawn service?
Frankly, as a lawn company in Louisville, KY we get as frustrated as you about lawn care companies that set the bar really low (because it harms the reputation of the industry as a whole).
That’s why we’re talking about valid reasons to switch lawn care companies and also how to cancel the lawn service you currently have. It seems as though the latter should be simple, but some companies even make canceling difficult.
Here’s some advice.
If you are experiencing any of the following, it’s time to consider a switch.
If your current lawn care company is proving to be unreliable, that’s a huge source of frustration. This can be in the form of poor communication or even just following through on what they say they’re doing.
We hear from homeowners that their lawn company never returns phone calls or maybe even doesn’t show up when they say they will.
When you are paying for lawn care, you have the right to expect a certain level of service. If you feel your current company isn’t following through, then it might be time for a new lawn service.
After all, you shouldn’t have to chase down your lawn care company or never feel as though you know what they’re doing. You’re paying for their service and you deserve the best they can offer.
This goes along with point number one but is such a prevalent problem in the lawn care industry that we wanted to give it its own section. Sadly, ghosting is a problem in the lawn care industry…particularly amongst companies that have a really high turnover rate.
With ghosting, a lawn company just doesn’t show up!
In fact, they might even say they showed up when they really didn’t. Check your home’s security cameras to see if they were really there.
Unfortunately, ghosting can sometimes mean the lawn company shows up but doesn’t actually provide the service you paid for. If you see a tech get out and just squirt some water in a spot on your lawn for a few minutes, you didn’t get the service you actually paid for. This is also a form of “ghosting.” They have to do more than just show up.
This can be a difficult one as it partially does have to do with expectations.
If you have unrealistic expectations that your poor-quality lawn is going to be transformed overnight, then you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
However, your lawn care technician should have set you up with some realistic expectations from the start. All lawns have different starting points (depending upon what kind of shape they're in), so it may take longer to see results on some lawns as compared to others.
While it’s true lawn care is a process and can take some time, if it seems like you’re seeing absolutely zero results, it could be that your lawn company is using subpar products or practices…or even worse, maybe not performing the services you paid for (like mentioned above).
If you’ve tried to talk to your lawn company about a lack of results, and you’ve gotten the runaround, then that should also be a red flag.
Obviously, things come up that might require a new lawn care service to be added to your program. But if you feel like you are constantly being upsold new services, it might be that your lawn company undersold you in the first place.
In other words, they knew what your lawn needed but they might have left it out of their package to make their price appealing.
We don’t like sneaky sales tactics like this. In fact, that’s why we group lawn services together in packages that include all of your needs. Even at the most basic level, a lawn care package should include core services that your lawn needs to perform its best. And these lawn care services should be plainly spelled out in a way that doesn’t solicit any surprises later. You should know exactly what’s included.
Lawn companies that are not as transparent with this information can make it difficult for you to understand what you’re paying for (and what you’re actually getting). This might also make it likely that you’re missing out on services you really did need from the start.
In many ways, it’s a matter of trust. If you feel like you can’t trust your lawn company, you will only have problem after problem to deal with.
While it might seem as though it should be simple enough to cancel a lawn service, we have heard a lot of stories about companies making this difficult. Even after a customer calls to cancel, they keep trying to show up and bill them. It’s sneaky…but it’s something that is definitely done.
That’s why we advise asking your current lawn company to put the cancellation notice in writing. At the very least, take notes on who you spoke to and the time and date of the call during which you canceled.
Also, be leery of lawn companies that try to make desperate attempts to keep you (such as suddenly dropping their price).
If you’ve experienced problems like the ones that we mentioned above, then trust your instinct that you’ve already decided it's time to find a new lawn service. And bear in mind that simply paying less for their service will not mean that they’re suddenly going to do a better job, either.
Ultimately, when do you cancel and switch to a new lawn service, you don’t want to end up with more of the same problems.
