Effectiveness of Canopy Sprays in Controlling Common Tree Pests and Diseases

When your trees are dealing with a problem like pests or diseases, it’s important that you take the next right steps. Proper tree health care can be complicated and most homeowners are unsure what to do.

Soil drenches and canopy sprays are two ways to protect and treat potential problems.

Whereas soil drenches involve applying a product directly to the soil so that the roots take up the chemicals and distribute them throughout the entire tree, a canopy spray for trees involves applying product to the outside of the tree.

As we’ve already covered soil drenching in a previous article, this article will cover canopy sprays and when they can be effective. It’s important to protect trees from pests and diseases so that you can help maintain their long-term health.

Managing Pests on Trees

There are more than 55 common tree pests here in the Louisville region. Pests can damage plants and trees in many ways from chewing on leaves to boring holes in the bark itself.

Understanding what you’re dealing with is the first step toward an effective solution. Pests that bore holes into the trunk or consume sap from branches are often best controlled with soil drenches. Since the product is taken up by the roots, it ends up being distributed throughout the tree, which helps control pests systemically.

But for pests that eat the leaves of trees, a tree spray application directly to the canopy can be most effective.

  • Bagworms are a common culprit here in Louisville, KY and are an example of a pest that can be treated with a tree spray application.

These are types of caterpillars that are characterized by the “bag” that they form for shelter. These bags are made from the caterpillar’s silk woven with pieces of your tree’s foliage. This is one of the tree bugs that people actually can spot with their eyes as they aren’t exactly tiny. The bag might be as long as two inches. These caterpillars will be hanging in their bags when not actively feasting on your tree leaves.

  • Japanese Beetles are another prime example. These pests are large enough that people tend to spot their shiny green bodies on their trees.

Unfortunately, if you have seen one Japanese beetle on your tree, there are likely to be many more. That’s because when this pest finds a good place to eat, it releases a pheromone to alert friends. The Japanese beetle is a pest throughout its entire lifecycle. They start life as grubs (that feast on your lawn) and turn into adults that feast on tree leaves.

  • Mites cause damage to plants by sucking their sap. But not all mites are bad. Trees can have good mites and bad mites. The “good mites” are those that are beneficial to the tree because they eat bad mites, like Spider Mites. Spider Mites are aggressive tree bugs that cause a lot of damage by sucking the cell content out of leaves. They are tiny but highly destructive.

Managing Disease in Trees

Plant diseases are also lurking in the landscape. Here in Louisville, there are more than 25 common plant diseases that we see pop up. Landscape diseases can be serious and need to be diagnosed by a professional. At the very least, diseases can cause cosmetic damage that will leave the canopy of your tree a mess.

Certain fungal diseases can be treated with a tree spray application applied directly to the leaves where the fungus is growing and spreading. Fungicides help to stop the spread of disease but won’t “cure” the damage that has already been done.

As with any problem, early detection is always best! Inspections and early interventions can help save your trees. Of course, some diseases are not treatable. If your tree is severely ravaged by disease, it could mean that tree removal is your best option.

Investing in Tree Health Care

Investing in tree health care services can help you protect trees from disease or pests. The goal should be proactive care that will ward off trouble whenever possible.

While even healthy plants can be subject to problems, the healthier your plants are, the better they will fare.

The best way to produce healthy plants that are more resistant to problems is with proper plant care. Specifically, Plant Health Care services involve a customized program with treatments that are designed for your property.

These services might include:

  • Insect protection
  • Scale protection
  • Mite and bagworm canopy spray
  • Foliar fungus protection
  • Root rot protection
  • Emerald Ash Borer protection

What exactly your property needs will depend on what's going on (including any problems you might have had in the past). At the end of the day, the best strategy is a preventative one.

Choosing Tree Care Services in Louisville

If you’ve experienced any signs of trouble with your trees, it’s definitely time to call in a pro. Symptoms like discoloration, leaf drop or wilting, spots on leaves, holes in leaves or the trunk, sticky or powdery substances, and more can all be indicators that something is wrong…and that you may have an issue with a disease or pest.

Of course, it’s better to not even wait until there’s trouble since you can often prevent tree and shrub pest and disease problems by being proactive. As we’ve mentioned, plant health care can play a valuable role in preventing problems.

When you call in tree care services, they can determine the best course of action for your tree problems. This may involve a canopy spray for trees for certain pests or diseases.
